The 720 area code is a dialing code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) assigned to the north-central part of Colorado State.

This area code is an overlay for the prefix 303, located in the same region. Both codifications surround 12 of the 64 Colorado counties; including Denver, Arapahoe, Jefferson, Boulder, and Adams

As an overlay, the coverage radius of the 720 area code is mainly focused on the municipalities of Denver, Aurora, and Lakewood. However, it stretches for the whole region, being one of the most important codes of the state´s telephone network.

1. History

The main prefix of Colorado, the 303 area code started running in 1947, being one of the 86 original dialing numbers installed in the U.S. and Canada territories. Initially, this codification surrounded the entire state, becoming Colorado in one of the few states functioning with a single code.

The first split for the 303 area code was the dialing number 719, which arrived on March 5, 1988, 41 years after the activation of the 303.

During the late 20th century, the Denver territory and the whole state had a rapid growth that makes necessary the implementation of an overlay plan to solve the exhaustion conflict in the region. For that reason, on June 1, 1998, the 720 area code began serving in the zone, being the last codification activated in Colorado.
